Even before the show could complete itself, “Awake” has been put to sleep. With ratings dipping below sea level, the cancellation was inevitable, but killing it before completion shows the NBC networks take on the show. It seems that the network has lost its faith completely on the show, and wants to increase its ratings by putting in more comedies. Though, the series has received critical acclaim, but this has not increased its TV ratings; the last episode “Say Hello to My Little Friend” did improve on the ratings, but it was too little, too late.
NBC, though, has decided to renew the Parks and Recreation, Up all Night and Whitney, for a second series. They think that these shows, which have a better record as compared to Awake, will be able to garner more audiences in the second season. They have also decided not to go for any pilots, till they have a clear schedule charted out.
Awake joins the list of other cancelled shows like “Are You There, Chelsea,” “Best Friends Forever” and the critically acclaimed series “Bent.” NBC seems to be concentrating only on increasing its ratings, and it is throwing off good shows as well. Well, there is good news for the fans of “Awake” series; its last two episodes will be aired, and it is going to be inconsequential, if it improves on its ratings. Let us hope that there will be a twist in the tale; until then, it is bye-bye Awake.
